Through fire on the ground, slime on the ground, void zones on the ground...

Five years ago today, I made a solemn vow. There aren’t many things any more that we vow about, if you think about it. You don’t tell your friend, “I vow I will help you in your epic moving quest!” The modern equivalent is a promise, unfortunately too oft broken.

So five years ago today, I made a vow. I said:

I take you to be at the top of my friends list, and part of your permanent group. No matter what mobs aggro on us, we will tank them together. In rez sickness and in 70 K HP, through hard modes and awful pugs, in boss kills as well as wipes. I promise to support your achievement goals – even if they involve something mind numbingly boring. I will always respect your aggro, laugh at your bad jokes on vent, and cry at them too. I will cherish and respect you until the day the servers go dark.

On that day five years ago, I was a noob, but since then I have learned.

Because I had this sketch, and I can't post a "real" picture, and it's my blog by gosh I will Draenify it if I want to!

Bad pugs make good stories. Sometimes life throws you an unbelievable encounter. Take a deep breath and work through it. If you don’t succeed, pick each other up and try again.

Sometimes life also throws you horrible clothes to wear because they have nice stats, but fortunately not this time.

It’s okay if you don’t share everything, unless everything is a turtle mount you’ve been trying to get for two years and what do you mean you just fished one up but you never fish are you kidding me?

The only reason he is alive for me to post this is because I got a turtle about a week later. Fortunately!

Servers may change, and guilds may change, but the most important thing is always the relationship you have with your partner. Find good people and appreciate them, but know when it’s time to move on for the good of your 2v2 team. Hopefully you find a place where moving on is unnecessary!

Because killing the Horde together is forever.

Get the Explorer title together for real. Don’t forget that a virtual world is fun, but it pales compared to the actual one. It doesn’t matter if you’re exploring a local bakery or the other side of the world – it’s the company that matters most.

When is it acceptable to go to Zul'Gurub? First date, third date maybe?

In case it isn’t clear, I’m talking about “Voss,” my strategist, favourite main tank, partner-in-crime, raid leader, husband and best friend. I’ll always have your back, no matter what we’re beating up. I promise to run Omen, but I probably won’t move it out from underneath Recount. Here’s to many more internet dragons, whatever the years may bring us! (But especially if the years include plenty of delicious chocolate cake).

The cake was not a lie, and it was delicious. I think of it often.

  1. Happy anniversary, you crazy kids!

  2. *soppy d’awwwww feelings* I think I have to go home now and give my SO a huge hug. Awwwwww

  3. Happy anniversary you two! Playing WoW with my wife (married 10 years next June, woo!) is an awesome experience. Never mind that she’s got more 80s than I do. Or can out-DPS me with her eyes shut and clicking half her abilities. >.>

  4. Happy anniversary! šŸ˜€

  5. Happy anniversary to both of you! This is such a sweet post. I love all those screens of the two of you together. šŸ™‚

  6. Great post! I’m very jealous that you two can play WoW together and have so much fun doing it. I’ve been trying to drag my girlfriend into the game for years. Clearly, she stacks resilience.

    • Apparently what you need is greater spell pen, right?! In all seriousness, though, I’ve never seen “the reluctant SO” thing work out well. It happens that I am the one who dragged Voss into playing WoW, but you can’t make someone like it if they are just not interested. šŸ˜¦ It’s unfortunate that is the case for you two, I am sure you share many other interests though!

  7. Delightful. If I can find myself something even half as special I’ll count myself a very lucky man indeed. Happy anniversary lady.

  8. Happy Anniversary! I love the eternal grudge about the turtle mount. You may have forgiven (read: gotten your own) but such an act of treachery shall NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

  12. Aww so sweet! Congratulations.

  13. d’awwww…

  14. Happy anniversary, Vid! That was a very sweet wow-ificiation of your relationship… ^^

    • Thanks Shintar, and of course thanks to everyone who commented (I feel silly going comment by comment going, ‘Thank you!’ but I do sincerely appreciate them all). I was hoping no one would think I was trivializing or saying we only care about WoW; I’m glad it seemed to come across the right way. Cheers. šŸ™‚

  15. Happy Anniversary!

You can’t say that enough times. I think.

(Although you do get a “Harumph!!!” for the “killing the Horde” crack.)

  16. Happy Anniversariy, Vid & Voss! ā¤

The sketch is my favorite pic of you two. šŸ™‚

  17. Congratulations! You two’re pretty. Nothing like tailed and hooved love.

I think. That cake looks mighty tasty, but it’s just a close second.

    • Thanks Mits. šŸ™‚ In actual fact, all of the photos I have with Voss, myself, and the cake… he never takes his eyes off the cake. It’s clearly where his true love lies!

  18. Awww congrats and Happy Anniversary!

  19. What a beautiful post!

Congratulations on your five years, happy aniversary and I hope you have many more wonderful years together ahead of you.

  20. Congratulations to you both! May you have many, many more expansions worth of content together, and may your time together be always Epic, except when it’s Legendary! šŸ˜€

  21. Bless šŸ™‚ Happy anniversary you two!

  22. Happy anniversary to two of my favourite space goats! šŸ™‚ I’m glad your five years have been as obviously wonderful as my five years were in June. May you have many many more years to be ridiculous space goats at each other.

(reasons I wish we could afford to drag AJ into playing, #281…)

  23. A very big congratulations to you both! It warms my heart to read about couples that are able to enjoy the same hobby and not kill each other in the process.

  24. Heh, my partner and I are an orc and a troll ingame, super hawt. I have a belf, but I doubt I’ll ever convince him to roll one for pretty couple pix.
