Five years ago today, I made a solemn vow. There aren’t many things any more that we vow about, if you think about it. You don’t tell your friend, “I vow I will help you in your epic moving quest!” The modern equivalent is a promise, unfortunately too oft broken.
So five years ago today, I made a vow. I said:
I take you to be at the top of my friends list, and part of your permanent group. No matter what mobs aggro on us, we will tank them together. In rez sickness and in 70 K HP, through hard modes and awful pugs, in boss kills as well as wipes. I promise to support your achievement goals – even if they involve something mind numbingly boring. I will always respect your aggro, laugh at your bad jokes on vent, and cry at them too. I will cherish and respect you until the day the servers go dark.
On that day five years ago, I was a noob, but since then I have learned.
Bad pugs make good stories. Sometimes life throws you an unbelievable encounter. Take a deep breath and work through it. If you don’t succeed, pick each other up and try again.
It’s okay if you don’t share everything, unless everything is a turtle mount you’ve been trying to get for two years and what do you mean you just fished one up but you never fish are you kidding me?
Servers may change, and guilds may change, but the most important thing is always the relationship you have with your partner. Find good people and appreciate them, but know when it’s time to move on for the good of your 2v2 team. Hopefully you find a place where moving on is unnecessary!
Get the Explorer title together for real. Don’t forget that a virtual world is fun, but it pales compared to the actual one. It doesn’t matter if you’re exploring a local bakery or the other side of the world – it’s the company that matters most.
In case it isn’t clear, I’m talking about “Voss,” my strategist, favourite main tank, partner-in-crime, raid leader, husband and best friend. I’ll always have your back, no matter what we’re beating up. I promise to run Omen, but I probably won’t move it out from underneath Recount. Here’s to many more internet dragons, whatever the years may bring us! (But especially if the years include plenty of delicious chocolate cake).
